Wall mirrors
Wall mirrors cut to the size of the wall
A made-to-measure mirror starts from the space: between two door frames, above a radiator, the full width of a vanity.
Vanity and bathroom mirrors
Cut to the counter width, with notches for lights and outlets made first. A glass shelf below can join the order.
Hallways and full walls
A tall mirror near the brightest room lights a long corridor. A floor-to-ceiling wall is usually several panels, easier on the stairs and to replace.
LED mirrors
LED and lighted bathroom mirrors
A lighted mirror puts light at face height rather than behind you. Backlit mirrors glow around the edge; front-lit ones shine through frosted bands in the glass. Some add a heated anti-fog pad or a dimmer.
Anything lit or heated needs power. The pro will advise on how it can be powered at that spot, and who should handle any new outlet. An anti-fog pad helps most where the fan struggles, but it clears the glass, not the room.

In small plex and condo bedrooms, mirrored sliders don't swing into the room and they double the window light.
Replace only the mirror
If a panel has cracked but the frame and rollers are fine, a new mirror can often be fitted into the existing door.
New doors, or new rollers
A door that drags or jumps its track usually needs rollers, not mirror. New doors are made to the opening when frames are bent; ask for safety-backed mirror.
Edges and mounting
Edges, bevels and mounting
A frameless mirror gets a polished edge, flat or pencil (rounded), or a bevel (biseau) that catches the light; a framed one can keep a plain cut edge. Small mirrors hang on clips; larger ones rest on a bottom support and are bonded with mirror adhesive, which won't attack the silver. Back-painted glass, as on a kitchen backsplash, mounts the same way.

What changes the price of a custom mirror
Size matters, but finishing and installation often count as much:
- Size and shape, including arches or angled corners
- Thickness and any safety backing
- Edge finish: polished, pencil or bevelled
- Holes and notches for outlets or lights
- Built-in lighting or heating
- Mounting, wall type and height

Big mirrors
Installing a large mirror in an apartment
In the pre-1980s buildings that make up most of Montreal's housing, walls are often plaster and seldom flat. A large mirror bonded to a wavy wall can distort or crack, so the pro may shim it, add a backing or split it into sections. Tenants should ask the landlord first, since a bonded mirror doesn't come off cleanly.
Small mirrors and decorative shelves are left out of the RBQ door-and-window licence subclass. For bigger glass work, ask the pro which licence covers the job and check it with the RBQ.
