From the island to Laval and the South Shore
Montrealers place themselves by sector, east end, north end, West Island, Rive-Nord or Rive-Sud, and the sector changes the job. In the central plex boroughs, replacements often must keep the look of the original windows. Much of the West Island is detached houses from the 1960s and 70s. Laval, Longueuil and Brossard are separate cities with their own permit rules. At the edge of the map, we'll check that a pro covers your address first.

It's the sealed unit: two or three panes joined by a spacer and sealed at the edges. Elsewhere in Canada it's a sealed unit or insulated glass unit; in Quebec, people say thermos in both languages. Fog between the panes means the seal has failed. In a sound frame, the thermos can usually be replaced on its own. See foggy thermos repair.
Often, yes. The rules differ by borough: most require a permit even for identical replacement, a few generally don't, and sliding patio doors need one throughout the city. Some boroughs ask you to have the permit before signing a contract or buying materials. Check with your borough first. Our guide to borough permits compares them.
They can, for full replacements. RénoPlex, run by the City of Montréal, pays a set amount per replaced window and door on eligible small plexes, and only if approval comes before work starts. Either can start the request. A tenant should tell the landlord promptly, in writing, with photos; a landlord can send the quote request directly.
